This is definitely a YMMV situation as it depends on the hotel type as well as the status. That said, I used to do red-eye flights every week and arrive at the hotel at around 5:30am/6:00am to take a shower and nap before I go into work. I was mentally ready though to simply sleep on the hotel lobby couch though...
I batted 100% for all starwood hotels I stayed at across the US for this, but I did have platinum status and routinely booked many many weeks at a time. I also indicated early checkin when I was making my reservation.
I would say, if you are looking at a resort location that you will not be as lucky even if you are platinum and only if you book in advance.

Anything is possible, but it if is important to have the room early, book the night before or see if the hotel offers early check in for a fee.
Totally agree with the excellent advice to follow up with the hotel before arrival to make SURE they are aware of the arrival time. Last thing I want 30 hours after leaving home is to find my reservation was considered a no-show...have the keys ready the very minute I enter the hotel
