I understand and agree with the above, but what I don't understand is the notion that PPBM makes us appreciably safer. The screening process is what it is. Whether or not pax are separated from their bags is imho the least of our worries.
I'd venture to say that there are fewer people who want to die in the process of making a point than just to kill others. If someone were to have some form of explosive in checked luggage, I'd say that it's more likely that someone would want to detonate such a device if they were not on the plane, and knew that they could standby on a different flight than their bag.
Not saying what the current rule really is as I don't know, but it seems more likely that someone would do something if they were not on the same aircraft.
