If you're a fan of contemporary art, at least one trip downtown is required to visit the Soweto Art Gallery, where you can see and buy the work of contemporary black artists from the townships. I didn't feel unsafe there at all, or elsewhere downtown -- near MuseumAfrica, for instance.
