Definition of most direct route

As part of my benefits package I am entitled to to the cost of an airline ticket to my home of record via the most direct route. My question is how is this defined? Is this the shortest distance, shortest flight time, fewest connections?
The difference in cost is enormous. Flying Jakarta to Toronto, I could do it all in one day departing CGK-HKG-YYZ, but a cheaper, perhaps shorter route, but longer layovers option might be flying through Singapore or LA. It all depends upon the definition of most direct routing.
This can have a significant financial impact upon me, and hence my curiosity.
