I had a very annoying related situation a year back. Spouse made it there by 4pm, my flight was delayed and I made it by midnight. They made a fuss about diamond benefits refused to her at check-in but I didn't know until I got there. Spent a good 20 minutes at check-out proving to the FD mgr that I was really there before they're take off the breakfast charge... and then got hit with a no-show charge after I left. All ultimately fixed but what a waste of time.
