Good luck with this. I've had problems when I checked in before UG cleared. Then when it did, it wouldn't allow me to select my Fc seat. I called and was told it's a problem with these system, which recognizes the passenger as being checked in already, so you can't "check in again" - what rubbish, and surely they could fix this. I didn't know you could offload yourself, so let me know if this works for you. Since this issue happened, I've been waiting a little longer to check in, and try check in after the UG clears.
Of my 4 eligible flights this months (I had tons of small planes with no FC), I got UG 3 out of 4 flights, and all cleared BEFORE I got to the airport.

When it happened to me and I selected my new seat, but it wouldn't save the seat assignment, I called UA. When I did, they told me I did have my seat assignment, which was what I selected, even though it didn't show. So I went to the airport with my E+ boarding pass and just got the new pass at the airport.
