I checked in 24h ahead of time for a flight yesterday (e-checkin), and got a note that I was upgraded 2 hours before the flight. My e-boarding pass automatically updated with my new seat in the upgraded class. You'll probably have to go to an agent to change the seat though, I didn't try to re-check-in or anything...
