Telephone check-in is only available for domestic itineraries.
From the AA March 2002 newsletter:
Telephone Check-In
AAdvantage elite-status members can check in with a simple phone call and then board the plane with the swipe of their AAdvantage card. As long as you're traveling
on a domestic itinerary with an electronic ticket, pre-reserved seat and no bags to check, you can call your elite-status hot line to check in.
