You can avoid them by using the elevator. There are no contractors at the top of the escalator. Better yet, I print my ticket, only have carry-on luggage, park on level 4 of the LAX Terminal 4 garage and you can walk directly into security (near the elevators).
But if the elite line extends down the escalators, expect to get lynched if you try to jump the queue instead of going down the escalator and joining the line downstairs.
