If you are a US citizen, you of course are required to enter on your US passport. If you are not a US citizen, you get a little green slip of paper stapled into your passport upon entry, which needs to be surrendered to the airline agents upon departure from the US (there are no exit checks upon departure of the US). If you do not do this, then you will face major problems upon re-entry.

Bear in mind that there is no "leaving" the US on any passport, as there are no exit checks (this is uncommon as most countries have some form of exit check).
