While I can't speak to how you may be interpreting some of the replies to your original post, you know from many years of travel that "fairness" and "logic" have NOTHING to do with how travel industry providers price their goods and services. It's similar to when you want to switch flights from one that is jam-packed, to one that leaves much earlier but has copious seats available. Unless otherwise dictated by the fare class or one's elite status, the airline--much like the car rental company--has all of the right in the world to charge you a different rate or penalty for making the change. In any event, good for you in getting Hertz to give you something back--they make too much money, anyway

I believe that it is not true (the "throw a bone" thing) for 2 reasons:
a) The 2 days prices was not twice the 3 days price as far as I remember. I'm still paying my 3 days rental to Hertz.
b) They sent me a mail acknowledging a mistake, not a goodwill gesture.
Regarding the fact that we have to accept non logical stuff provided they are coming from the majority:
a) I philosophically disagree

b) Following such school of taught women would still be forbiden to vote all over Europe (and elsewhere)
c) If you look at the hotel industry, they also have penalty for checking out earlier than schedule, and I accept and respect that. But they DO NOT change the tarif of the entire stay backward.
For airlines, I dont know, I have clear contract with airlines, straightforward and as untricky as possible.
Of course, you are right to say that there are several unfair and unlogical situation to be dealt with in the travel industry. If everybody accept with a smile, they will continue. If everybody complains when the logic goes out of range, you might see a change.
