I understand that UA and EI are partners and so no EQM's if flying on a EI flight number ( partners mils yes), but I always thought that by flying on a UA flight number that EQM were possible.
So why would one fly on a UA flight number on EI , if all you end up getting are regular miles whether you buy the ticket with EI or UA flight numbers
For Star Alliance (unlike oneworld) mileage accrual depends exclusively on the metal, flight number is totally irrelevant. So if you're on EI metal on a UA ticket, then no UA EQMs

. To answer your last question, the only reason to buy an EI flight with a UA flight number is if it comes out cheaper than EI flight number.
