No, this isn't true at all; if you are on the same reservation, you will upgrade together assuming of course there is availability. If you're on separate PNR's they won't join you. If you are both gold, though, you may consider splitting the PNR's and upgrading separately as it is often easier to upgrade two parties of one than one party of two.
It *would* be correct, though, if there are other people on your PNR. If you have a party of 3 and 2 are preferred, you upgrade automatically. If you are 4 and 2 or even 3 are preferred, you do not.
Just out of curiosity, who told you this?
