Thanks paul2, much appreciated. I think that for the very demanding traveler (which I think you are), it may be advantageous and possible to rent the whole "luxury" slow boat for the 1 night/2 day trip from Chiang Rai to Louangphrabang. The jungle lodge halfway doesn't look too bad from their website.

The speed boats are rough.
