Learn the alphabet and also have your husband carry around a small pocket guide for English<->Russian phrases, it will help.

The subway, aside from a few small limited signs are all in cyrillic. The subways aren't hard to navigate thanks to the colour coded system... however a few minutes spent studying the metro map will pay off in the end.

Cab's are out of the question... everyone who has a car in Moscow is a cab driver and if you don't speak the language you'll most likely be taken on a long tour of the city at a rate equal or close to the total of the national debt, avoid this option.

Busses are better options when travelling the outer parts of the city. The Metro in Moscow is the best in the world, efficent, quick, cheap and enjoyable.

Tell your hubby to stick to area's that are touristic as he'll find things a bit easier to navigate. Most restaurants have English menu's and speaking staff but this holds especially true to American franchises, such as TGIF's... amazing how many of them are in Moscow and how identical they are to our own.

And most importantly, remind him to keep that passport and visa handy, you don't want to get asked for your papers without them.
