Frequent Guest Programs Reward Loyalty
As a member of several hotel reward programs I must say that it is common practice that points not be awarded when rooms are booked through third party sites like Booking.com etc. Reward programs are intended to win business by rewarding customers who book through the chain's own distribution channels (read: lowest cost channels). By definition, when one books through sites like booking.com, Expedia etc. one isn't loyal to the chain but the deal. Hotels move rooms through third party channels but at a steep cost to them (often 20-60% off their rates). The third party channels then mark up the wholesale prices to something that approximates what you would pay if you booked with the chain directly. No points? No surprise - the points have got to be paid for somehow. If your buying "wholesale", don't expect the perks.
