I think that the biggest thing that makes a difference is how often you frequent particular properties. I've stayed and the Austin Downtown Hilton, Nashville Hilton Suites and the OKC Skirvin Hilton enough times that I'm always treated like a rock star and given every upgrade available, including suites 80% of the time. When I show up at a Hilton I've never been to, I'm treated like every other Diamond member that they haven't seen before. Pretty average.
