On my last MIA-SFO flight, I also had purple AA Baggage stickers placed on my two carry-on items at check-in. They said it was to streamline the boarding process, which is a euphemism for identifying passengers with more than 2 carry-on items (and thus padding AA's bottom line). I am a big fan of this initiative if it's widely implemented
