I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but I have not seen much benefit of being a Diamond as opposed to a Marriott Plat. Today as I am checking out of a Doubletree in Bloomington, IL I asked for late checkout until 2:30 and they said I would be charged 50 dollars for this extra hour and change. I could get this on Marriott and up to 4 PM on SPG.
Other than the points, I haven't been upgraded to a suite or anything fancy and only 2 properties have actually recognized my status and thanked me for my business.
Is this just SOP for Hilton or should I be doing something different.

Unfortunately, policies and Diamond treatment vary from property to property.
Upgrades to suites are not a stated benefit, though I've been upgraded to a suite once or twice. Again, YMMV.
As Jabez stated breakfast as a stated benefit is fantastic and is the biggest thing keeping me with Hilton.
