Last time I checked in, it was manually, and for a ticket in a woman's name. They didn't even blink.
Depending on where you buy your ticket, it might not contain a name anyway. If they're issued in Germany or the Netherlands they don't. This is one reason why I think E* are very resistent to the UK E-borders concept because it would require a PNR to exist like with air travel where it presently doesn't.
Away from E*, some advance-booked domestic UK train tickets carry a name, but this is always of the purchaser and is irrelevant unless you're travelling on a self-print ticket of some sort.
