Yup. Generally speaking the airline has pretty good flexibility in regard to luggage, especially in IROPS. Heck, I once had a bag take the long route to Hawaii. My HNL-ATL flight had a problem, switched to a HNL-MSP, but my bags took the long route LIH-HNL-SFO-MSP-DCA. Personally I was fine with it, because (at the time NW) just delivered them to my apartment a few hours later. Saved me the hassle of taking them on the metro.
