If you're looking for good deals, remember that there are advance purchase offers (online through Trenitalia and in stations). Right now in Rome, there are billboards up offering 25 euros to Naples and 39 euros to Milan (35 and 69 in first class), if you can reserve 30 days in advance. They are of course non-refundable and non-exchangeable.
