That's a misstatement.

In the case of both Eastern and Pan Am, those airlines essentially liquidated, even if some of the assets were retained by other airlines (CO purchased part of Eastern and DL purchased part of PA).

TWA was technically "merged" into AA, but it was a well-known fallacy, as TW had not made a profit in 13 years and that TW/AA merger took place in TWA's 3rd bankruptcy.

Whichever airline ends up truly pulling the strings at UnCo, this is a true merger and CO is certainly not a teetering hulk on its last legs like the examples you cited.
