As others have stated go with the debit card. Call your bank and ask what the fees will be if you are not sure
If you exchange $US for Euros at an exchange place you will get a pretty good rate but they will charge you a " transaction fee " of around $15

I was in Rome a couple of weeks ago and withdrew 250 Euros and was charged $333.95 plus a $2.00 fee for the bank and a $ 0.41 conversion fee for Mastercard.

Don't forget to notify your Bank of your dates of travel so they won't shut you off when they see some unusual activity.
