Can someone provide me the basics of the UA mileage plus program?
On Continental:
25k = silver
50k = gold
75k = platinum
platinum + $30k spent = presidential platinum (new this year -- give access to president's club)
100k gives 4 one-way upgrade certificates that can be used even internationally (new this year)
Upgrades for platinum domestically are generous, get processed automatically, starting x hours before flight (sorry I cannot remember).
How does Mileage plus compare?
There are lots of threads covering such topics in the UA forum, but to give you a quick start...
25k = 2P (Premiere) = CO Silver
50k = 1P (Premiere Exec) = CO Gold
100K = 1K (1K Premiere Exec) >= CO Platinum
unknown, invite only = GS (Global Service) ~= Presidential Platinum
1Ks get 6 SWUs (System-wide upgrades) at the start of the year. 2 CR-1s (Confirmed Region 1--basically North America) are given for the first 10K BIS (butt in seat) miles flown per quarter. Exit rows can be selected from booking time onward. 8 other people can sit with a 1K in the E+ section provided they're on the same PNR. 1Ks can board at any time during the boarding process via the Red Carpet.
All other status levels can have one other (?) person in E+ with them provided they're on the same PNR. 1Ps can also select exit rows in advance (from booking onward)
Both 1Ks and 1Ps can use the shortened security lines at most airport.
UDUs (unlimited domestic upgrades) are given to all elite flyers but it's first based on elite status then fare class paid (YBMEHUQVWSTKL).
Welcome aboard
