I still don't understand why we don't have a clear answer to this. I applied a mileage upgrade to a multi-segment transcon. The first and third segments cleared immediately, while the second segment (IAD-SFO) was waitlisted. Over several weeks, I called UA four times to check the status of the waitlisted upgrade. Every time I asked them about upgrade instruments trumping UDUs and every time they admitted that they didn't know. Most thought instruments would trump UDUs but couldn't find anything in writing. One asked a supervisor who also didn't know.

After the IK UDU window and before the 1P UDU window, I cancelled the mileage upgrade and requested UDU. first and third segments cleared on time, while the second segment (IAD-SFO) is waitlisted...
