Not quite sure how you managed that unless you got very lost. The Heathrow Express is easily less than a quarter of a mile from T3 and gives free transit to T4 - all indoors.
I should add I do this trek twice every 2-3 weeks.
Go downstairs in T3 near the check-in desks group A and follow the signs for "Heathrow Express". From there it's either about a dozen steps down or an elevator and then a short walk to the entrance to the Heathrow Express. It should take you about 5 minutes.
