I did plan on circling it, meaning from Kaanapali taking the route to Kahului via Kapalua.

This is not too bad at all, the road is just narrow but the main thing is that it is LEVEL and there are no inclines or steep grades. The problem arises when you have to go on such a road at a 30 or 40 degree grade.

I have done similar drives in Germany when crossing the forests in the Rhine valley. The only thing is it seems to be a very slow and boring drive with no real lookouts to pull over (I may be wrong, making a judgement by what I see in this video) so I may just head down southbound from Kaanapali and then take the route 30 from Maalaea to Kahalui... I hope the road to Hana isn't so disappointing!
