Can the transfer be done airside? Or does one have to leave security? We're arriving from Boston to Rome and connecting from Rome to Venice. Both on Alitalia flights.

It is airside, and it is a short walk. You will go through passport control.
If you are a ST Elite+ passenger, you can use the priority security lines at FCO should the need arise.
