Depends on who "they" are. Europe is not one country. It's many countries and many cultures...

In some European countries (such as Belgium) the concept of a woman changing her name on marriage is completely unknown (so much so that when a Canadian friend of mine went to live there her Belgian bank insisted on putting her bank account in her maiden name). In other countries it is standard practice for a woman to change her name on marriage and have the married name entered into her passport.
