Class of service and other preferences (price, schedule)?

Personally, I would think CX would be the better choice, if you have status or want to earn Asia Miles. I would not recommend UA in Y (F/J products are quite nice) unless you have access to Economy Plus, the price is significantly lower than CX/SQ or you have status on UA / *A.

CX is offering fares from HK$5580 ex-HKG (exc. of tax/YQ), SQ at HK$6594 (no miles). Alternatively, there is UA (earns miles) to LAX via NRT, and from LAX, you can fly to SFO from HK$5360.
