Yes, there are carseats laws applied to under 4-year-old and/or 18kg kids/babies. Commercial cars (taxis, I think) and ambulance are excluded.
If you 6-year-old weight more than 18KG, then you don't have to worry about it.
Thanks a million!!! I appreciate all the links! That's *exactly* what I was trying to find (without luck) - as your speeding analogy goes: I might intend to drive 70mph on the interstate regardless, but I'd like to KNOW whether the limit is 70 or 55....
We actually are back already - and had no issues (as expected) but it's good to know that we were in fact legal! My kids were somewhat distraught (despite repeated advance warnings from Dad) that about half our cabs lacked rear seatbelts, but they dealt with it. In my experience, the missing belts are not a design feature, but a cabbie "enhancement" - all the cabs we rode were newer than the 2001 law, so they certainly were *built* with seatbelts.
