mvoight has the right idea. Renting off airport and returning airport saves large money in many locations and is often easier also.
And if you're renting for a longer time, but want the car from the airport, it usually pays to do a one day rental to a location that's a city location, then re-rent the same car (new reservation) for the duration of your long trip from that city location with an airport return. It can knock off $10/day in airport-rental nuisance fees (both Hertz's and the municipality's)
