There has, in fact, been a press statement on this from Ryanair in the last few weeks (saying that this is now under serious consideration) - so this is most definitely NOT a case of the US press picking up an old story.
The press statement regarding this was made by Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary in Brussels on April 14, 2010. He stated that he's willing to give all the money from the pay toilets to charity and that removing some of the toilets from planes would allow him to add in six additional seats.
"If I add six extra seats, all the fares come down across-the-board by four percent.”
A win-win – except for those who need to use a restroom while on board.
