The box is for all the interactive stuff. I.e. pay-per-view, video games, etc. The super cheap hotels very rarely have them, but for the mainstream and up, it is a tossup. Especially now a days with stuff like iTunes, Hulu, etc, the internet provides far more entertainment (and at a better cost) than the in-room movies.
