FAMs are always on the job. They do not get paid hourly. These are professionals just like Pilots. Isn't the FAM program expansion a direct result of wanting the cockpit to be secure at all times. Isn't this why they always sit in the front.
This was my thought as well. It's rather difficult to protect the flight deck if you're sitting in 40B. (assuming they're "on duty")
