You are correct. Done it many times. I don't do any of the more extreme things suggested here (airplane mode with WiFi on, SIM card removed), and have no problems. I like leaving the phone on in case my wife wants to call me in an emergency or send a text to me; I am pretty stingy about who else knows my cell phone number, and my kids know when I'm out of the country.
