If the number of USA-Europe non-stop destinations is important you simply have picked the wrong carrier. MAH4546 may correct me, but IIRC AA could double its number of destinations and still have fewer than Delta; I haven't checked CO thoroughly.
I don't think AA has to try to beat Delta and have the most destinations ex-USA to Europe, but it would be nice if they more competitive in that arena. I'm hopeful that the post-ATI enhancements that MAH has referenced will improve this.
I compiled the following Europe destination counts from Wikipedia, so the accuracy may be slightly rough, but it's close. (These are destinations ex-USA, not necessarily from JFK/NYC)
Delta: 31 (6 of which are seasonal)
Continental: 27 (1 ending in November)
US Airways: 17 (6 seasonal)
American: 11
United: 10
