I think it's a good question and I do it whenever necessary.

From the term 2/3 stop, if I just miss a Jamaica-bound (outer loop) train and the inner loop train comes, I jump on, get off at 8 and catch up to the Jamaica train I just missed. If not, it's generally 5-15 minutes between trains, depending on time of day...

(Other stuff is interesting of E vs A from the city, but that's not what the OP was asking...)
