Question iPhone in Paris - WiFi only?

I've read numerous threads about locked, unlocked, jailbroken iPhones...

I'll be in Paris for 10 days with my AT&T plan iPhone 3G.

I will not need to make phone calls at all (either local in France or international).

The only thing I want to do with my iPhone while there is access email (hotmail) and the basic apps (google, zagat, facebook, NY Times news).

Am I correct in assuming I can turn my data roam "off" and use only open/free wifi provided by local establishments and not incure any extra charges upon my return????

Thanks in advance!
