I guess the remaining question is why FAMs can't sit in 38A and 40B when off-duty, but that's a question for another forum (and another poster!).

FAMs are always on the job. They do not get paid hourly. These are professionals just like Pilots. Isn't the FAM program expansion a direct result of wanting the cockpit to be secure at all times. Isn't this why they always sit in the front.
