Drug violence scares off tourists to Mexico
Against that ancedote the story also cites year-over-year change in actual visitor counts to Cancun: down 4%. That's a trivial drop that could be matched by Disney World, London, or Washington DC.
Sure, there are people with a weak knowledge of geography and culture who will hear of drug violence 1000 miles away and find a new vacation destination - but that's no reason to feed their fear and ignorance.
