The bag matching practice is to prevent passengers from loading bags onto flights which he/she is not on. In this case, there is no way for the passenger to know/plan in advance. @:-) Your bag may or may not get on to an earlier flight, depending on load. Once I flew DEN-ORD-LGA but my bag came in early on DEN-LGA non-stop which left at around the same time. Yes, always check with scanner, if available.
