My preferred method is using the Gatwick Express train to Victoria Station, taking a cab/tube to Paddington Station, and then hopping on the Heathrow Express to LHR. Both trains leave every ~10 minutes or so. If you hit the schedules perfect, you can do the transfer in about an hour. It's a nice change of scenery for little while from the airports and lets you see a little bit of London.
