apparently.....

.....in order to allow stranded passengers to rebook onto flights there has to be seats available to sell. if the seat availability was set to zero to stop new bookings then stranded passengers would not be able to rebook onto flights home. the boffins figured the simplist way to keep availability open was to set the price ridiculously high to deter new bookings thus continuing to allow those stranded to rebook (stranded passengers are not being charged to rebook nor do they have to pay any differential in the price)

whilst i respect mr calder (having met him a few times also), like all journalists he has a certain take / spin on things which in this case being factually accurate (how unusual these days in the media) is not telling the whole story.
