JFK Airtrain loop directions?

Any answers to my question would mean only a few minutes plus/minus difference in total travel time, so I'm asking mostly out of curiosity...

Looking at http://www.panynj.gov/airports/pdf/j...re-english.pdf for travel from T1 to NYC, it looks to me that taking the (black) loop line T1->T8 and change to the (green) Howard Beach route at T8 could get me out of JFK on an earlier train than taking the HB route from T1, looping around the terminals. Correct? Or does the transfer at T8 involve changing platforms that would eliminate any time savings?
