Hotels have a greater incentive to treat "free" guests better because they have more opportunities for incidental revenue. Parking, meals (including room service), and gift shop sales are a few places where they can make extra money. An airline is more limited in what it can get from passengers (baggage fees, meals, and alcoholic drinks), but this won't apply for first/business class award tickets.
