To be fair, this is common in many industries - prepaid credit cards, gift cards, rebates - all get some of their profit by non-redemption of 'purchased' values.

Its not reasonable to expect miles to last forever, as there is cost to the company associated with them, but whether 18 months is a fair expiration is another matter.
