Couple of things...first of all, people do look presentable in a t shirt and jeans. Secondly, I've received upgrades all the time, and all with no need to wear suits and ties. In my experience, the people with more money and resources tend to dress casual and the people who are forced to wear suits and ties (or feel like they need to in order to validate themselves) are faking it until they make it so to speak.

There are obviously many people who wear ties who aren't faking it but don't kid yourself if you think you need to wear it to get respect or anything else, thinking that way shows a lack of confidence in my opinion.
