It's possible the sale had ended by the time the VbV process had completed ... in which case your only complaint is about a poor error message. "There was an error" vs "The fare isn't offered anymore so your purchase failed".

Orbitz & Expedia show expired fares in its search results now & again, and you only find out when the "purchase" fails. I don't really see you having a successful argument to AC on this.
